Rangikapiti Pa is a significant site for Ngati Kahu, and the terraces and defensive ditch can still be clearly seen.  Legend says that it is named after the wife of the Maori chieftain Moehuri.  I am not sure if it is significant that ‘kapiti’ can mean the ‘cleft between the rocks’.  There is certainly  wonderful outlook over the surrounding countryside and bays.
